Livestock Investigator
The Township of Perth East Council has appointed Municipal Livestock Investigators, whose role is to complete a full investigation within three (3) days of receiving notification from the Clerk of a livestock loss attributed to wildlife.
What is the Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program?
The Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program provides financial assistance to producers whose livestock, poultry and bees have been damaged by wildlife. Under the Program, producers are entitled to make claims to the Township for livestock and poultry losses attributable to attacks by wildlife species.
Some of my livestock/poultry have been killed/injured. What do I do?
Where the owner of livestock or poultry discovers that any of the owner’s livestock or poultry has been injured or killed and to the best of the owner’s knowledge and belief such injury or death was caused by wildlife, the owner must contact the Township of Perth East Clerk within forty-eight (48) hours of discovering the injury or death. The Township Clerk will immediately notify a municipal livestock investigator. My beekeeping/beehives/bees have been damaged/killed/injured. What do I do?
Where the producer discovers their beehive, bee colony and beehive related equipment has been damaged and to the best of the producer’s knowledge and belief such damage was caused by wildlife, the producer shall notify the Ontario Apiary Program within 48 hours of discovering the damage. If you are a beekeeper, you do not report damage to the municipality.
Within 3 days of receiving notification, the investigator will make a full investigation and then submit a written report within 10 business days after receiving notification to the producer and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness.
What happens after I have submitted a complaint?
The municipal livestock investigator will make and complete a full investigation within three (3) days of receiving the notification from the Clerk. When conducting an investigation, the investigator will record such evidence, including the taking of photographs that is reasonably necessary to allow another person to review the evidence and make a conclusion as to whether wildlife caused the injury or death to the livestock or poultry. The investigator will make a report in writing within ten (10) business days after receiving notification and provide to the Clerk for review.
If the investigator determines that the damage was caused by a dog that is not habitually kept on the premises of the owner of livestock or poultry, the owner is not eligible for compensation through this program. If the damage is caused by dogs, the process set out in the Protection of Livestock and Poultry from Dogs Act shall be followed.
What do I do with the carcass of the livestock/poultry?
The owner of the livestock or poultry cannot destroy or dispose of or permit to be destroyed or disposed of the carcass of any livestock or poultry reported killed until the investigator has seen the carcass and agrees that the carcasses can be destroyed or disposed (with the exception that an owner is required to dispose of the livestock or poultry because of the requirements set out under Ontario Regulation 106/09).
How am I going to be compensated?
The program provides 100% of the value of the loss up to the prescribed maximum compensation values. For the list of maximum compensation values, please refer to the program guidelines.
