All Wheel sports has become a popular recreational sport among youth, as well as children and adults. The low cost and unstructured nature of skateboarding appeals to many different types of users. It attracts individuals who want to be active, but don't participate in traditional sports like soccer, baseball or hockey. As a growing community, the need for diverse and low cost opportunities are becoming more evident. A skate facility can be the hub for community life, it can be a catalyst for healthy community living in which young and old socialize, have fun, develop new skills, make new friends, hang out and much more.
In addition, the pandemic has shown the importance and need of outdoor recreational space in our communities.
Project Beginnings |
Milverton All-Wheels Park Committee is a group, formed by Optimist Club of Mornington members, whose goal is to raise the awareness and the funds required to build a free public all-wheels park in Milverton.
A local parent sent a letter to several community service groups in the fall of 2020 asking for someone to take the lead in trying to get a skatepark built in Milverton. They have 4 boys, the oldest is 10 and they love using skateparks in the surrounding communities and wished there was one closer to home. It was a very compelling letter. The removal of the ice from the Perth East Recreation Complex during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic was the catalyst we needed to get started on first steps towards building this new facility. If an all-wheels park had been available in Milverton it would have been “pandemic-proof” providing a safe, outdoor space for users to enjoy while maintaining physical distance from each other. Since the motto of Optimist International is “Friend of Youth”, we felt the Optimist Club of Mornington is uniquely positioned to promote and facilitate this goal. |
